Australia has increased the cost of international student visas, doubling the fee from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600 as of July 1, 2024. The significant hike has raised concerns, especially among Indian students planning to study in Australia, a top destination for higher education.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh confirmed the development in a written response to a Rajya Sabha query. He stated that the fee hike could impose financial challenges on students from India and other countries. Singh added that the Ministry of External Affairs has taken up the issue with the Australian government, emphasizing the importance of India-Australia educational partnerships, which are integral to bilateral ties.
Financial Impact on Indian Students
The fee increase could substantially affect Indian students, who already face high tuition fees and living costs in Australia. Many students rely on scholarships, personal savings, or loans to fund their education. The additional visa costs may deter some from pursuing their dreams of studying in Australia or push them to seek alternate destinations.
Australia hosts over 100,000 Indian students annually, and this increase might influence prospective applicants’ decisions. Financial constraints could also prompt students to explore other countries with more affordable visa and education fees.
India-Australia Educational Collaboration
Education remains a cornerstone of the India-Australia partnership, fostering strong academic and economic ties. However, visa-related issues could strain this collaboration. Singh reassured that the Indian government is actively engaging with Australian authorities to address concerns affecting students.
This development serves as a reminder for students to factor in additional costs when planning to study abroad and explore scholarships or financial aid options to mitigate the burden.
