In 2023, the number of international students in the United States increased by over 10% compared to the previous year, nearing pre-pandemic levels. India emerged as the top source country for international students, surpassing China for the first time. According to data from Homeland Security, India sent 27% more students than in 2022, while China’s student numbers only grew by 2%.
Dr. Mrika Martel, head of research, evaluation, and learning at the Institute of International Education (IIE), noted a significant increase in international student enrollments over the past two years. “US colleges and universities have the capacity and desire to accept more international students, largely due to the value they bring,” Martel said.
International students contributed over $40 billion to the US economy in 2023, according to NAFSA. Beyond the financial impact, these students enhance the diversity of US campuses and bring crucial global perspectives to the country’s academic and social environments.
The 2023 Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) report from Homeland Security analyzed data on F-1 (academic) and M-1 (vocational) students, as well as exchange visitors and their dependents. The report revealed that students from 238 different countries came to the US, with 71% hailing from Asia.
The total number of F-1 and M-1 students in 2023 was 1,503,649, slightly below the 2019 pre-pandemic figure of 1,523,758. All US regions saw an increase in international student numbers, with the South experiencing the highest growth at 13%. California remained the top destination, hosting 16% of all F-1 and M-1 students, followed by New York and Texas.
The most popular majors among international students were computer science, second language learning in non-English languages, and business administration and management. Indian students dominated STEM fields, making up nearly 40% of international students in these subjects, while Chinese students accounted for 23%.
Leading universities for international enrollment included New York University, Northeastern University, and Columbia University, each hosting over 20,000 international students.
With restrictive policies on international student inflows in Canada, Australia, and the UK, stakeholders see an opportunity for the US to further grow its international student population. New research from April 2024 highlighted that the US has taken the lead as the most desirable destination for international students, surpassing Australia, Canada, and the UK.
“Universities must integrate internationalization into diversity strategies, recruit from a broad range of markets, advocate for more student visas, and consider financial support options for international students,” Martel added.
The growing interest in the US among international students underscores their commitment to pursuing global education despite being sensitive to policy changes, noted Simon Emmett, CEO of IDP Connect.
