University of Sheffield Launches New Four-Year Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) Program

The University of Sheffield is set to launch a new four-year Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree in September 2025 to meet the rising demand for skilled pharmacists. This program combines in-depth scientific knowledge with patient-centred care, providing students with essential training for real-world pharmacy practice. The curriculum features placements in community, hospital, and primary care settings, preparing graduates for diverse roles in healthcare.

Professor Susan Matthews, Head of Pharmacy at Sheffield’s School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery, stressed the importance of producing well-rounded healthcare professionals. “Pharmacists are crucial in improving patient outcomes. Our course aims to develop graduates who are not only experts in their field but compassionate professionals who make a difference in their communities,” Matthews said.

A unique aspect of the program is the social accountability placement, which partners students with over 130 community organizations. This initiative aims to address local health needs while enhancing student learning.

Additionally, Sheffield will offer a Master of Pharmacy with a Preparatory Year, allowing qualified Pharmacy Technicians to earn a full degree through the Department for Life-Long Learning.

Professor Ashley Blom, Vice President and Head of the Faculty of Health, emphasized the program’s alignment with the university’s mission. “Launching the MPharm program highlights our dedication to delivering life-changing education and improving health outcomes in South Yorkshire. With a strong legacy of innovation, Sheffield remains at the forefront of medical education and research,” Blom said.

The university is in the process of securing accreditation from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), with provisional approval pending full accreditation.
