Complete Guide For Studying Bachelors In Germany

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers scholarships to Indian students in Germany. Applicants get a chance to collaborate in projects with German scientists, researchers and practitioners in a wide variety of areas. DAAD Scholarships are open to all subjects, be it Architecture, Management, Technology or Arts and Literature.

Following is a brief description of the scholarships on offer:

Scholarships for Students in Germany:

I. DAAD WISE (Working Internships in Science & Engineering)

Students pursuing Bachelor degree/ Dual degree/integrated programmes in subjects like Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences etc. from selected Indian universities can apply for scholarship for 2-3 months internship at institutions of higher education and research institutes in Germany.

DAAD WISE scholarship includes

  • A monthly assistance of Euro 650 for subsidised living expenses.
  • A lump sum travel subsidy of Euro 575.
  • Compulsory health insurance covered by DAAD.

II. Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding – Dr. Angela Merkel Scholarship

Objective: To do a Master’s degree (LL.M.) in European Law at one of the selected German universities

Target Group: Highly qualified graduates with a first university degree in law (Bachelor’s or equivalent)

III. Study Scholarships for Architects in Germany

Target Group: Highly qualified graduate (bachelor’s or master’s) applicants from the fields of Architecture

IV Study Scholarships for Artists in Germany

Target Group: Highly qualified graduate (bachelor’s or master’s) applicants from the fields of Fine Art, Design, Film, Music, Performing Arts (Drama, Direction, Dance, Choreography, etc.)

V. DAAD Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries

Objective: To do a postgraduate degree course in select subject at one of the select German universities

Target Group: Very well qualified graduates (the 4-year degree awarded not more than 3 years ago) from any discipline with at least 2 years of relevant work experience


VI. DAAD Master’s Scholarship for Public Policy and Good Governance (PPGG)

Objective: To do a Master’s degree at one of the selected German universities with the following focus areas: Public Policy, Good Governance, International Relations, Public Management, Administration, Civil Society

Target Group: Very well qualified graduates from focus related disciplines

Scholarships for Researchers in Germany:


VII. DAAD PhD/Sandwich/Short Term/Post Doc Scholarships

Objective: To do a PhD degree at one of the German universities or research institutions OR

For registered PhD students at an Indian university/institute to carry out research for their PhD thesis in India and in Germany under the joint supervision of an Indian as well as a German professor. PhD degree to be awarded by Indian university/institution OR

For undertaking a research project at one of the German universities or research institutions without any degree awarded.

Target Group: Highly qualified postgraduates from any discipline OR

Scholars registered for their PhD (in any discipline) at universities or research institutes in India (Sandwich and Short Term) OR

Teachers and scientists at Indian universities and research institutions from any discipline


VIII. Research Stays in Germany

University academics and scientists from India on active duty who want to carry out a research project at a state (public) or state-recognised higher education institution or non-university research institute in Germany can apply. The duration of the stay is from one month to three months.

Eligibility: The applicant should be a university academic or scientist on active duty, who should generally hold a doctorate/PhD.
