UK Reaffirms Warm Welcome to International Students: Graduate Visa Here to Stay

Watch below as the UK government sends out a welcoming message to international students and explains the benefits of the Graduate Route visa and the strengths of the British education system.

The UK’s Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, has delivered a powerful welcome message to international students considering studying in the UK. Speaking to an audience of global diplomats, Phillipson emphasized the UK government’s commitment to providing a warm and lasting welcome for international students and reaffirmed the stability of the Graduate Visa program, which allows new graduates to remain in the UK for up to two years to pursue employment.

In her address, Bridget Phillipson MP, who recently took on the role of British Universities Minister, highlighted the government’s intention to change the narrative surrounding international students. She acknowledged past mixed messages from previous governments and assured the audience that the current administration would take a clear and supportive stance.

“International students will always be welcome in this country,” Phillipson stated. “This new government values their contribution – to our universities, to our communities, to our country. We want Britain to welcome those who aspire to study here and meet the necessary requirements.”

She further elaborated on the benefits of a diverse student body, noting that international students enrich British universities and communities by bringing fresh perspectives and fostering innovation. “Closed systems that only look inward quickly run out of ideas. Creativity crumbles, innovation dies. But through our international partners, we can bring back fresh thoughts that breathe new life into our society, including our universities,” Phillipson added.

The Minister shared personal anecdotes about her friendships with international students during her own university years and praised the talent and courage of those who choose to study abroad, highlighting their positive impact both during their studies and as graduates contributing to the UK workforce.

Phillipson’s comments were met with widespread approval from students, universities, and education providers. The UK Council for International Student Affairs expressed delight at the government’s clear and positive messaging. The Russell Group, representing leading British universities, also welcomed the Minister’s remarks, hoping this clear communication would resolve past controversies over international student policies.

Ruth Arnold, Executive Director of External Affairs at Study Group and founder of the #WeAreInternational campaign, applauded the Minister’s speech, stating, “The Minister’s words are a source of encouragement for all of us who support international students. These brave individuals take a leap of faith by moving to a new culture to gain new skills and explore new horizons. We must honor their efforts and the sacrifices of their families, and as the Minister promised, we will do everything to help them succeed.”

The full speech by Bridget Phillipson is available on YouTube, where she details the government’s vision for a more inclusive and globally connected educational landscape in the UK.

Phillipson also confirmed that the Graduate Visa, which enables international graduates to stay in the UK for two years post-study to gain work experience, will continue to be an integral part of the UK’s international education strategy, providing reassurance to students and stakeholders alike about the future of international education in the UK.
