University of Southampton to Launch Gurugram Campus, Aiming for 10,000 Students

The University of Southampton, a globally recognized institution, is set to open its new campus in Gurugram, India, in 2025. The university plans to cater to high-achieving students who miss out on admission to India’s premier institutes like IITs, IIMs, and ISB. Positioned as an alternative to studying abroad or opting for lesser-known colleges, the Gurugram campus aims to deliver world-class education tailored to India’s growing demand for quality higher studies.

Initially, the university will begin with two master’s and four undergraduate programs, primarily focusing on engineering and management disciplines. The first batch is expected to comprise 200 students, with plans to scale enrollment to 10,000 annually over the next decade. “High-quality education is not about volume,” remarked Lil Bremermann-Richard, Group CEO of Oxford International Education, the organization assisting with the campus setup.

One of the key draws for students is affordability. The programs at the Gurugram campus will cost up to 40% less than similar offerings abroad. This is especially appealing amidst rising costs and stricter immigration policies in countries like Canada, Australia, and the UK. Additionally, students who prefer staying close to home due to family commitments or other reasons now have access to international-grade education within India.

The university is also taking steps to address the shortage of high-quality faculty by initially recruiting academics from the UK and other countries, with plans to balance local and international educators over time.

The launch aligns with the Indian government’s recent policy shifts allowing foreign universities to operate in India, signaling a significant milestone in the country’s education landscape.

This expansion underscores Southampton’s commitment to accessibility and excellence, providing a stepping stone for Indian students to achieve global academic standards without leaving the country.
